EMIR, Ltd. is an Irish owned and operated environmental and asbestos testing lab “Testing Ireland’s Samples In Ireland” and making SEM movies using the powerful combination of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and Mass Spectrometry. The identification and characterization of asbestos is an excellent example but the same techniques and instrumentation can be used to test and characterize almost anything.
The Scanning Electron Microscopy Video (SEM Video) above left details crystalline structure of individual powder-sized pharmaceutical crystals as they are tilted 180o and rotated through 360o. SEM Movies of production batches of bulk pharmaceuticals can visually characterize individual crystal thickness accurately by measuring them against certified size internal calibration standards that can be added to almost any sample. The SEM Video above right provides a close look at the solder joint of an electronic component on a circuit board.
Quantitative elemental analyses by SEM/EDS at EMIR have answered questions ranging from testing alloy specifications in metal stock for machine shops to identifying process contamination for semi-conductor manufacturers. EMIR’s Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS) identifies organic contamination inside large matrices or on the outside of small parts.
